As far as I am aware, last night was the first night this year in my area that the temperature remained above freezing all night. Maybe spring is here at last?<br />
<br />
None of the moths were unexpected but it's always reassuring to get the first moths of the year and as such I decided to take a few photos. <br />
<br />
Large Grey Pinion (Lithophane georgii)<br />
Speckled Green Fruitworm (Orthosia hibisci)<br />
Dot-and-Dash Swordgrass (Xylena curvimacula)<br />

With the current period of wet weather the numbers are inevitably falling again. Still, I have had some new backyard species including a few micro's and 4 macro moths. The following are those which I have ID'd with a reasonable level of confidence. Of course, I'm always open to other suggestions...<br />
<br />
I'm quite pleased with the Narrow-winged Midget moth photograph as I was, for once, able to get quite a large image of this relatively small moth (forewing length approx 13mm). The image below is scaled down for the blog. This moth is one of the, so-called, Bird-dropping Moths. A bird dropping mimic.<br />
<br />
Another moth of interest for me was the Toadflax Brocade. I understand that this moth was introduced into North America as a biocontrol agent for Toadflax (linaria spp.). It has been noted a few times in Alberta but I wonder if an Alberta population is becoming more established now? It was certainly the first time I have encountered this moth.<br />
<br />
I hope you enjoy the photographs.<br />
<br />
New backyard species:<br />
<br />
1515 Shy Cosmet Moth (Limnaecia phragmitella)<br />
6726 Obtuse Euchlaena (Euchlaena obtusaria)<br />
9111 Narrow-winged Midget Moth (Tarache augustipennis)<br />
9814.1 Cosmia elisae<br />
10177 Toadflax Brocade Moth (Calophasia lunula)<br />
<br />
Other species:<br />
<br />
9385.1 Double Lobed Moth (Apamea ophiogramma)<br />
9417 Neumogen's Quaker (Oligia egens)<br />
<br />

There were approx 40 macro moths of 20 species in the trap this morning.<br />
<br />
Here are a few photographs. I always have trouble with the Barred Yellow which often sits with its wings folded. This is a slightly better photo than previously.<br />

<br />
3 moths of 1 species in my light trap this morning. Great to see them returning, may it long continue!<br />

<br />
Nearly all the photos are stacked images. That is, the product of one or more photographs with slight different focus points combined. The photos are, for the most part, somewhat downsized for quicker loading. I intend to add 1 or 2 additional blog entries for last year in the near future. <br />
<br />
My 2 new Calgary backyard species during this period were, American Barred Umber Moth (<em>Plagodis pulveraria</em>) and Tissue Moth (<em>Triphosa haesitata</em>). Ulolonche disticha was also a new moth for me but was seen in Lethbridge. With regards to the Clover Looper Moth (<em>Caenurgina crassiuscula</em>), I always find separating <em>Caenurgina erechtea and c.crassiuscula </em>a little tricky but am leaning towards crassiuscula in this case.<br />
<br />
Here’s a list of the photographs.<br />
6237 Tufted Thyatirid (<em>Pseudothyatira cymatophoroides</em>)<br />
6304E Split-lined Angle Moth (<em>Speranza bitactata</em>)<br />

The most I’ve had of this species in one night. There were 3 Speckled Green Fruitworm (Orthosia hibisci) and the new species for the year was, a not unexpected, Western Swordgrass Moth (Xylena thoracica).</p><p>Added a photo from a birding trip last week NE of Calgary. Always nice to see the return of Long-billed Curlews.</p><p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8qp9m51BQKE/WuTVDDWVCBI/AAAAAAAAEVo/B9Jqt1j0Zb4qGJxfeuN9gxj_FffAx8hMgCHMYCw/s1600-h/Western-Swordgrass%255B14%255D"><img width="622" height="699" title="Western-Swordgrass" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="Western-Swordgrass" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RQe3xQGfdOk/WuTVD_BWOnI/AAAAAAAAEVs/RgqgxnIkdmA9sNqAqBgJtTYj-zTZdd-0QCHMYCw/Western-Swordgrass_thumb%255B12%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ufRvE8izMT8/WuTVEo3STtI/AAAAAAAAEVw/0gg5Ff2DnHgAXZ8CXfTaRWGpXH5FZzITgCHMYCw/s1600-h/Speckled-green-fruitworm%255B18%255D"><img width="623" height="750" title="Speckled-green-fruitworm" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="Speckled-green-fruitworm" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tuYOmsJGRE4/WuTVFr0WxUI/AAAAAAAAEV0/jpBMooAcba4k5zl3CHrmMnzIlJEcw9-mwCHMYCw/Speckled-green-fruitworm_thumb%255B16%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a></p><p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GCcg-W60DgQ/WuTVGPUoEdI/AAAAAAAAEV4/UenEBYeHw3YzMfHu2_ezeJtbocPk0x1CgCHMYCw/s1600-h/0Q8A4759%255B18%255D"><img width="714" height="571" title="0Q8A4759" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="0Q8A4759" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cs1eqehT0l4/WuTVGoRI5dI/AAAAAAAAEV8/zUWHKaijHOIquDpG0xNARsVGZ-CY9OtmwCHMYCw/0Q8A4759_thumb%255B14%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a></p>Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-434145388683350431.post-66394808756989567152018-04-27T17:33:00.001-06:002018-04-27T17:33:58.432-06:00First backyard moths for 2018<p>Last night, I put my backyard light trap out for the first time this year and was pleased to find 5 macro moths of 5 species in the trap. The Underwings can be tricky to separate but given its size, a wingspan at least 8cm, colour and wide black bands, I am reasonably confident that the first photograph is a Once-married Underwing (Catocala unijuga).</p><p>I’ve had a good number of new backyard species during our extended hot spell which I will be blogging about in the near future.</p><p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ec1G5KTsXFA/WYU41LkTmeI/AAAAAAAAEPg/kvWfldWt71gBiLCCCiuL-ONqPQtEB6OkACHMYCw/s1600-h/Once-married-Underwing%255B10%255D"><img width="703" height="525" title="Once-married-Underwing" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="Once-married-Underwing" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0Kk3GjCvO2E/WYU42FSSbLI/AAAAAAAAEPk/SuT1KPa2LN4cEztHB_O2r7PZem9Hzsf0gCHMYCw/Once-married-Underwing_thumb%255B8%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-L3WoH8hCqIo/WYU43rYtDVI/AAAAAAAAEPo/Yy3frMyp0S0brGJaWBBN9Ai1asfhIi5agCHMYCw/s1600-h/Once-married-Underwing1%255B15%255D"><img width="564" height="623" title="Once-married-Underwing1" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="Once-married-Underwing1" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U5x39cSiFuM/WYU44U5GowI/AAAAAAAAEPs/NeD46zs26eIVITVgdsq1t9zGQ1qlJqICACHMYCw/Once-married-Underwing1_thumb%255B13%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3yshj1HwtFM/WYU452HdLUI/AAAAAAAAEPw/aXEOSyPbbTY6EWE8lhlathus4PiNe6X8gCHMYCw/s1600-h/White-lined-Sphinx%255B9%255D"><img width="703" height="495" title="White-lined-Sphinx" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="White-lined-Sphinx" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZR3gEZL2nSw/WYU46nYG15I/AAAAAAAAEP0/cn5lQD-kHsMHg32JZmYQleKUtBacycbYQCHMYCw/White-lined-Sphinx_thumb%255B7%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ucZuQGBvoWo/WYU48OeJuOI/AAAAAAAAEP4/Zd9bxKv_o3YV2644XPmpewNjHdeAvgiyQCHMYCw/s1600-h/White-lined-Sphinx1%255B9%255D"><img width="698" height="574" title="White-lined-Sphinx1" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="White-lined-Sphinx1" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8CTMf0t42pI/WYU480sPD8I/AAAAAAAAEP8/rHBKEJTHfL0M7XvY8PlZh56Jo-q6Mio-ACHMYCw/White-lined-Sphinx1_thumb%255B7%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r6UlY4WpP-g/WYU49-kGaGI/AAAAAAAAEQA/MGfPLNk8lJgZe90seqjiM1Thp4GZrdyTACHMYCw/s1600-h/One-eyed-Sphinx%255B7%255D"><img width="699" height="448" title="One-eyed-Sphinx" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="One-eyed-Sphinx" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_tSeVM0X_Fs/WYU4-o1FVaI/AAAAAAAAEQE/jq2baeH3rs8zh1CmjRtVk_PPqo9Rx-vpgCHMYCw/One-eyed-Sphinx_thumb%255B5%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-h7MgWj2AAsI/WYU5AXg0pzI/AAAAAAAAEQI/c5B0jlgDCuYDoSF2s5DCzbXmFXgUQgSNACHMYCw/s1600-h/Gallium-Sphinx%255B9%255D"><img width="700" height="561" title="Gallium-Sphinx" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="Gallium-Sphinx" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vIHc-lsTuxY/WYU5BNEkMqI/AAAAAAAAEQM/_PkhevPgXWkdSPFHrjWaX1nOzVJKAGBNwCHMYCw/Gallium-Sphinx_thumb%255B7%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9oEsLRrbFJR6eUTZ8ufYXyTya4ot8fDjFyTL-zoSIPk7Z68pIw5WJEQVuLssm4FMSLvX2_nu_xd6f5JMJ9Y3YsidCSZ1WTURVSJONsqR4H_H1jIt8fr3_5Ul0V-JU3ZG307JDZYoy-aOB/s1600-h/Briseis-Underwing%255B13%255D"><img width="567" height="690" title="Briseis-Underwing" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="Briseis-Underwing" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-npQG087nxJg/WYU5C-kBiHI/AAAAAAAAEQU/OIcIpHm8VSwUxDEsmP-dixGW3uVT0butACHMYCw/Briseis-Underwing_thumb%255B11%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a></p>Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-434145388683350431.post-21462467830883192612017-06-28T15:30:00.001-06:002017-06-28T15:32:06.190-06:0027th-28th June<p>There were 15 Macro moths of 8 species in my light trap on the 27th and 29 moths of 13 species last night. The numbers appear to be picking a bit up now. It was nice that, for once, the Geometrids stayed still long enough for a few photographs. All the photographs consist of at least 2 images that were “stacked” in Photoshop. Stacking allows me to get a better depth of field.</p><p>Crocus Geometer moth (Xanthotype sospeta) is difficult to separate from False Crocus Geometer Moth (<i>Xanthotype urticaria</i>) but I’ve tentatively put this one down as Crocus Geometer because of the paler yellow colour and relatively smaller and less prominent markings.</p><p>I’ve also included a photograph of one micro moth, Pyrausta nicalis.</p><p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mcOZkFunlI8/WVQf7mOk0sI/AAAAAAAAEOc/thTHEyB5K7EtiyaWSNvBHLePtl0_8QptwCHMYCw/s1600-h/Crocus-Geometer-%2528Xanthotype-sospeta%2529%255B10%255D"><img width="709" height="427" title="Crocus-Geometer-(Xanthotype-sospeta)" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" alt="Crocus-Geometer-(Xanthotype-sospeta)" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BuqHkdPcdJk/WVQf8VLMz_I/AAAAAAAAEOg/kqg4zP0bUY4kibTBuLSLpOjk1BDRvXbswCHMYCw/Crocus-Geometer-%2528Xanthotype-sospeta%2529_thumb%255B8%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e7ZvObQ4fZ8/WVQf9TO0sQI/AAAAAAAAEOk/aqJs81thbE8xXJh49m5j-xsrYtAsyzf6wCHMYCw/s1600-h/False%2BBruce%2BSpanworm%2B%2528Speranza%2Bloricaria%2529%255B11%255D"><img width="552" height="465" title="False Bruce Spanworm (Speranza loricaria)" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" alt="False Bruce Spanworm (Speranza loricaria)" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9T4UYj7_cUY/WVQf91uadiI/AAAAAAAAEOo/m_ilquzqcWQU6E6OnDViK3hWkpjPxxtQwCHMYCw/False%2BBruce%2BSpanworm%2B%2528Speranza%2Bloricaria%2529_thumb%255B9%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_gPlNcktZT4/WVQf-ltfKZI/AAAAAAAAEOs/izZyvN2VGNUBld0g3SKk-JydHHFRHgEqQCHMYCw/s1600-h/Yellow-dusted-Cream%2B%2528Cabera%2Berythemaria%2529%255B9%255D"><img width="704" height="365" title="Yellow-dusted-Cream (Cabera erythemaria)" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" alt="Yellow-dusted-Cream (Cabera erythemaria)" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8i1ch8rneJ4/WVQf_I7HTmI/AAAAAAAAEOw/6my_pWpyUYwni-Nl1QEmX49bagrxQX6PgCHMYCw/Yellow-dusted-Cream%2B%2528Cabera%2Berythemaria%2529_thumb%255B7%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/---kab_5RDkE/WVQf_y9nUUI/AAAAAAAAEO0/PFyzoKzsAS43ZN4KrWJ8fUTrMd21O1dfQCHMYCw/s1600-h/Anicla-tepperi%255B9%255D"><img width="375" height="403" title="Anicla-tepperi" align="left" style="float: left; display: inline; background-image: none;" alt="Anicla-tepperi" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MuU14OuwYN4/WVQgAVwl2II/AAAAAAAAEO4/KzO4r4GO7IU1JZqYuEtLiy0qURVCDz_igCHMYCw/Anicla-tepperi_thumb%255B7%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2sh8p-O0h-Y/WVQgA0XPnuI/AAAAAAAAEO8/4cp6A76DFdUdmoWpt2S-PBpxqPaJhSIwQCHMYCw/s1600-h/Bristly-Cutworm-%2528Lacinipolia-renigera%2529%255B8%255D"><img width="337" height="400" title="Bristly-Cutworm-(Lacinipolia-renigera)" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" alt="Bristly-Cutworm-(Lacinipolia-renigera)" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kZLeuFlaW6k/WVQgBed_SBI/AAAAAAAAEPA/Gdq0gioqMggws1f3RNTAN1Z_uGGCRG5uwCHMYCw/Bristly-Cutworm-%2528Lacinipolia-renigera%2529_thumb%255B6%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg38VHu59LdYE9RUnJ105uSfNPqfX21NXbfH36kLOBStDvF07Q2j9LqQ9LhyMUfpvStGoRXTMpkGR74btdBEgrhkjTEkRmeODuRs73Iw7ASQYth-OOAlf0mR6WF8JG2QsqVaK8WgT90oNje/s1600-h/Little-White-Lichen-Moth-%2528Clemensia-albata%2529%255B9%255D"><img width="339" height="358" title="Little-White-Lichen-Moth-(Clemensia-albata)" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" alt="Little-White-Lichen-Moth-(Clemensia-albata)" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y2afFjs1QyI/WVQgCsjThcI/AAAAAAAAEPI/Me9IVLaoWuQdoV7JlGMOapK1Z5alkFDNACHMYCw/Little-White-Lichen-Moth-%2528Clemensia-albata%2529_thumb%255B7%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4kxB4EtIsG8/WVQgDnb3DQI/AAAAAAAAEPM/mcAJI6SAK0QkAPsk-BDoGBskg7p-WidswCHMYCw/s1600-h/Pyrausta-nicalis%255B6%255D%255B3%255D"><img width="369" height="358" title="Pyrausta-nicalis" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" alt="Pyrausta-nicalis" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nB4gQGIzpdo/WVQgDyEmAkI/AAAAAAAAEPQ/fqiNPdYqYuUGk8md3AFIym3RSCK55yQAwCHMYCw/Pyrausta-nicalis%255B6%255D_thumb%255B2%255D?imgmax=800" border="0"></a></p>Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-434145388683350431.post-13179200964682929442017-06-22T17:36:00.001-06:002017-06-22T17:37:34.492-06:0020th-21st June<p>I finally got around to running the light trap overnight on the 20th June and last night. There were 12 macro moths of 8 species in trap yesterday morning and 5 macro moths of 4 species in the trap this morning. Neighbourly Arches (Lacinipolia vicina) and Large Looper (Autographa ampla) were the new species for the year. </p> <p>The following species were the ones photographed yesterday morning. It’s always nice to see a Putnams Looper (Plusia putnami). I believe the micro moth is a Large Aspen Tortrix Moth (Choristoneura conflictana).</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CaZdExnS_24/WUxUa5juodI/AAAAAAAAENs/PIg4PE3-n7gyIE-eY0Ks-9wKpyE7GEOSQCHMYCw/s1600-h/Putnams%2BLooper%2BMoth%2B%2528Plusia%2Bputnami%2529%255B8%255D"><img title="Putnams Looper Moth (Plusia putnami)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Putnams Looper Moth (Plusia putnami)" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Zdk75rjKaU4/WUxUbITY5SI/AAAAAAAAENw/-MAOTnv_EAAm1irfrbKKK9H9RCHOaGkuACHMYCw/Putnams%2BLooper%2BMoth%2B%2528Plusia%2Bputnami%2529_thumb%255B6%255D?imgmax=800" width="605" height="405"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-j-Vi4-7zNH8/WUxUcKPrDWI/AAAAAAAAEN0/rvRLRqemmDk8lcWHYhIJ0wZ_AePge6InwCHMYCw/s1600-h/Yellow-Headed%2BCutworm%2B%2528Apamea%2Bamputatrix%2529%255B10%255D"><img title="Yellow-Headed Cutworm (Apamea amputatrix)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Yellow-Headed Cutworm (Apamea amputatrix)" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QYFUX0RMcR4/WUxUc8LbqyI/AAAAAAAAEN4/aNZiI0Ltj2gMA6_NWrvS7Pjf7x1l5VpFQCHMYCw/Yellow-Headed%2BCutworm%2B%2528Apamea%2Bamputatrix%2529_thumb%255B8%255D?imgmax=800" width="512" height="549"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PiTjjIV-vC0/WUxUdgvDI9I/AAAAAAAAEN8/-kQU0iOLIXIlxvwwC_REfjkirKUl6Y9RwCHMYCw/s1600-h/Grey-Dagger%255B7%255D"><img title="Grey-Dagger" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Grey-Dagger" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dItkX89O5UE/WUxUeHlgw3I/AAAAAAAAEOA/KYDL6j5e7Rs1uczSB4IXBPh7MbE6LRQRgCHMYCw/Grey-Dagger_thumb%255B5%255D?imgmax=800" width="511" height="647"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7IF5kk4_8WM/WUxUe9D49PI/AAAAAAAAEOE/mUpgT9tR53EYny1L1qMNdLkppnJmVRliQCHMYCw/s1600-h/3637%2BLarge%2BAspen%2BTortrix%2BMoth%2B%2528Choristoneura%2Bconflictana%2529%255B7%255D"><img title="3637 Large Aspen Tortrix Moth (Choristoneura conflictana)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="3637 Large Aspen Tortrix Moth (Choristoneura conflictana)" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xGlKpnYjKAw/WUxUfmLEfoI/AAAAAAAAEOI/-2iydJI-qC0-9Df4qZu2zQzqxtCNPgq6wCHMYCw/3637%2BLarge%2BAspen%2BTortrix%2BMoth%2B%2528Choristoneura%2Bconflictana%2529_thumb%255B5%255D?imgmax=800" width="509" height="637"></a></p>Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-434145388683350431.post-42689103272395403442017-04-06T13:41:00.001-06:002017-04-06T13:41:45.374-06:00The Moths are back!<p>I didn’t blog much at all last year but aim to be more active in 2017. With that in mind and given the warmer weather, I decided to put my backyard light trap out last night. I wasn’t disappointed as there were 4 moths of 4 species in the trap this morning and one of these appears to be a Goat Sallow Moth (Homoglaea hircina) which is a new backyard species. Assuming that my ID is correct, that’s not a bad start to the mothing year!</p> <p>Here’s the list and a few photographs taken this morning.</p> <p>Speckled Green Fruitworm (Orthosia hibisci)<br>Western Swordgrass Moth (Xylena thoracica)<br>Dot-and-Dash Swordgrass (Xylena curvimacula)<br>Goat Sallow Moth (Homoglaea hircina)</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzqapE7LJO8zKlZIhnGiR89FmmA-eFXuPbhdWK-SgY0xmt83012CWG84OMwcVdCuDupQFmffsrNw3QWHgUoBalizxnULAm8ExSb7o2FmsTlss1B57nF_0Rk548_0qPpu8HZ6a5HfGI2STV/s1600-h/Goat%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img title="Goat" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Goat" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-StcYUJo7kww/WOaZ7MLVpxI/AAAAAAAAENA/GL80LH95Ytc/Goat_thumb%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="401" height="535"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KXpHgm--gaA/WOaZ7qHS5dI/AAAAAAAAENE/PXESlv5OY6c/s1600-h/Untitled_Panorama8k%25255B15%25255D.jpg"><img title="Untitled_Panorama8k" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Untitled_Panorama8k" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-evEOjA7oQ0o/WOaZ8AOImTI/AAAAAAAAENI/6-w38j--Zw8/Untitled_Panorama8k_thumb%25255B13%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="406" height="460"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1oHZYrTtQdY/WOaZ89oTw-I/AAAAAAAAENM/IuhgCM4_pH0/s1600-h/Untitled_Panoramak8%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="Untitled_Panoramak8" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Untitled_Panoramak8" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9m7BuQahydw/WOaZ9FTBUVI/AAAAAAAAENQ/K7A-wzQLJh8/Untitled_Panoramak8_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="404" height="496"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rynKdaxcZoU/WOaZ9iVP3QI/AAAAAAAAENU/1foG-wLvoFg/s1600-h/Untitled_Panorama12k%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img title="Untitled_Panorama12k" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Untitled_Panorama12k" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-F6-c1L-jBYU/WOaZ-AZMoyI/AAAAAAAAENY/3vlfH84pVs8/Untitled_Panorama12k_thumb%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="406"></a></p>Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-434145388683350431.post-17655606114745636282016-04-18T12:48:00.001-06:002016-04-18T12:48:41.081-06:0017th-18th April – Lappet Moth<p>Not too much to report but I have had my first Lappet Moths (Phyllodesma Americana) since 2013. This appears to be quite an early Alberta record. Given the recent warm weather I wouldn’t be at all surprised if I see a few more early records. </p> <p>The other species were the expected:</p> <p>False Pinion - Litholomia napaea<br>Western Swordgrass - Xylena thoracica</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XnOIk4EJTHc/VxFPre_mNoI/AAAAAAAAEKk/2bLU5lRxE2o/s1600-h/Egira%252520rubrica%2525201K%25255B18%25255D.jpg"><img title="Egira rubrica 1K" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Egira rubrica 1K" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2oeF353u2tQ/VxFPs3EMTpI/AAAAAAAAEKs/FwAARCCGteA/Egira%252520rubrica%2525201K_thumb%25255B16%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="483" height="549"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bpI-j0BEV54/VxFPwC6JPkI/AAAAAAAAEK0/vz6mVQX92xo/s1600-h/Egira%252520rubrica%25255B17%25255D.jpg"><img title="Egira rubrica" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Egira rubrica" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ipdc6Cq9_uI/VxFPykGM46I/AAAAAAAAELA/jcfjB30H7lc/Egira%252520rubrica_thumb%25255B15%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="478" height="581"></a></p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-04D9kS1HB78/VxFP1jzLSbI/AAAAAAAAELI/xNRPUwnmD_k/s1600-h/Speckled%252520Green%252520Fruitworm%252520%252528Orthosia%252520hibisci%252529%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="Speckled Green Fruitworm (Orthosia hibisci)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Speckled Green Fruitworm (Orthosia hibisci)" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zBaScEfZejo/VxFP2ia0QII/AAAAAAAAELM/YTD_BnsDXyY/Speckled%252520Green%252520Fruitworm%252520%252528Orthosia%252520hibisci%252529_thumb%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="359" height="381"></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MUmwXIxFuhw/VxFP5vIeRtI/AAAAAAAAELY/Yp6_Szy0Y7s/s1600-h/Untitled_Panorama9k%25255B11%25255D.jpg"><img title="Untitled_Panorama9k" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Untitled_Panorama9k" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IYmuFBElMcg/VxFP6UCt43I/AAAAAAAAELg/byIV9BzClfc/Untitled_Panorama9k_thumb%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="300" height="379"></a></p>Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-434145388683350431.post-43387051641869014002016-04-06T15:49:00.001-06:002016-04-07T07:56:53.042-06:002015 Backyard Macro Moth Summary<p>As I have already had my first few moths of 2016, I thought it was about time that I completed last years summary…</p> <p>In 2015 I counted 3,222 macro moths consisting of 160 species. There were more than 3,222 moths in my bait and light traps but 3,222 are the moths that I could identify with a reasonable level of confidence. Of course, there are always a few moths which are a best guess based on location, date of occurrence etc.</p> <p>The 10 most common moths were as follows. No real surprises here.</p> <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="516" border="1"> <tbody> <tr> <td valign="top" width="231"><strong><font size="2">Common Name</font></strong></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><strong><font size="2">Scientific Name </font></strong></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><strong><font size="2">No’ of Records</font></strong></td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230"><font size="2">Glassy Cutworm</font></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><font size="2">Apamea devastator</font></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><font size="2">452</font></td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230"><font size="2">Thoughtful Apamea</font></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><font size="2">Apamea cogitata</font></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><font size="2">398</font></td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230"><font size="2">Bristly Cutworm Moth </font></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><font size="2">Lacinipolia renigera</font></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><font size="2">382</font></td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230"><font size="2">Olive Arches </font></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><font size="2">Lacinipolia olivacea</font></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><font size="2">173</font></td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230"><font size="2">Vancouver Dart </font></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><font size="2">Agrotis vancouverensis</font></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><font size="2">165</font></td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230"><font size="2">Bronzed Cutworm Moth </font></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><font size="2">Nephelodes minians</font></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><font size="2">154</font></td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230"><font size="2">Setaceous Hebrew Character </font></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><font size="2">Xestia c-nigrum</font></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><font size="2">139</font></td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230">Civil Rustic</td> <td valign="top" width="175">Platyperigea montana</td> <td valign="top" width="108">124</td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230"><font size="2">The Mottled Rustic</font></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><font size="2">Caradrina morpheus</font></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><font size="2">109</font></td></tr> <tr> <td valign="top" width="230"><font size="2">Lesser Wainscot</font></td> <td valign="top" width="175"><font size="2">Mythimna oxygala</font></td> <td valign="top" width="108"><font size="2">92</font></td></tr></tbody></table> <p>I recorded 19 new backyard moth species in 2015. This was up from only 7 in 2014. I think a possible reason for the improvement was a drier June which allowed me to put the light trap out more often. Once again, my thanks go to Gary Anweiler for his help identifying the new moths!! Even when I think I know what the moth is (and I often don’t) it’s great to get confirmation of a new backyard species. <p>Here’s the list of the new backyard species for 2015 followed by some new species photographs.</p> <p>Pale-marked Angle Moth (Macaria signaria)<br>Gray Spruce Looper Moth (Caripeta divisata)<br>Mountain Girdle Moth (Enypia griseata)<br>Small Phoenix Moth (Ecliptopera silaceata)<br>White-ribboned Carpet Moth (Mesoleuca ruficillata)<br>Wormwood pug (Eupithecia absinthiata)<br>Sigmoid Prominent Moth (Clostera albosigma)<br>Isabella Tiger Moth (Pyrrharctia isabella)<br>Northern Pine Tussock Moth (Dasychira plagiata)<br>Colorful Zale Moth (Zale minerea)<br>Frigid Owlet Moth (Nycteola frigidana)<br>Pink-barred Lithacodia (Pseudeustrotia carneola)<br>Splendid Dagger Moth (Acronicta superans)<br>Brown-lined Sallow Moth (Sympistis badistriga)<br>Orthodes obscura<br>Old Man Dart Moth (Agrotis vetusta)<br>Praevia Dart Moth (Xestia praevia)<br>Two-spot Dart Moth (Eueretagrotis perattentus)<br>Abagrotis hermina</p> <p> <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rHzIsXX6kec/VwWD6rn2kcI/AAAAAAAAEF8/ywXOacSP4CU/s1600-h/6344-Pale-marked-Angle-Moth-Macaria-%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img title="6344 Pale-marked Angle Moth (Macaria signaria)" style="border-left-width: 0px; I have only recorded this moth once before in Sept 2008 and that specimen was quite worn so I am very happy with this sighting. Other moths include an Ashen Brindle moth (Lithomoia germana) and Alberta Lutestrin (Ceranemota albertae). The latter moth was a fairly worn specimen but I’ve included the photographs as they are good enough for an ID. </p> <p>The 300th backyard macro moth turned out to be a Frigid Owlet Moth (Nycteola frigidana) that I recorded on the 10th June. Not a spectacular looking moth or specimen but as a new species I’m quite happy with it. Hopefully the October Thorn will supply the colour in this blog entry.</p> <p>The moths since my last blog (excluding the Frigid Owlet Moth) were:</p> <p>Alberta Lutestrin (Ceranemota albertae)<br>October Thorn (Synaxis jubararia)<br>Ashen Brindle moth (Lithomoia germana)<br>Nameless Pinion Moth (Lithophane innominata)<br>Battered Sallow Moth (Sunira verberata)</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ru2BHQ4XT3Q/VfijpM3L1vI/AAAAAAAAD_g/PRmjsb25wnM/s1600-h/OT%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="OT" style="border-top: 0px; The first one turned out to be a dark form of a moth that I see most years, a Kidney-spotted Rustic (Helotropha reniformis). I spent several hours trying to ID this moth and without Gary Anweiler’s help I’d probably still be searching! The second moth is a new backyard moth, Mountain Girdle Moth (Enypia griseata). Thanks again to Gary for the ID confirmation and the additional info’. Another moth which was new to my backyard in August was, I believe, an Old Man Dart Moth (Agrotis vetusta). </p> <p>With the addition of the Girdle Moth (Enypia griseata) my backyard macro moth list is now 299. Hopefully, I will find 1 more species before the mothing season is over…</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jyeZUAAtZ2I/Ve89pEPxRXI/AAAAAAAAD-o/cyvKNnrKeo8/s1600-h/9453%252520Kidney-spotted%252520Rustic%252520melanic%252520%252528Helotropha%252520reniformis%252529%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img title="9453 Kidney-spotted Rustic melanic (Helotropha reniformis)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="9453 Kidney-spotted Rustic melanic (Helotropha reniformis)" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aEWA062aczY/Ve89p4Dtx0I/AAAAAAAAD-w/Ik8rCJDjnx0/9453%252520Kidney-spotted%252520Rustic%252520melanic%252520%252528Helotropha%252520reniformis%252529_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="507" height="507"></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XcjOd4ECADQ/Ve89rUw-IOI/AAAAAAAAD-4/0QIgsyKFdxo/s1600-h/7006%252520Mountain%252520Girdle%252520Moth%252520%252528Enypia%252520griseata%252529%252520%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="7006 Mountain Girdle Moth (Enypia griseata) " style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="7006 Mountain Girdle Moth (Enypia griseata) " src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yVFramOx5gs/Ve89seV7izI/AAAAAAAAD_A/sjj1mUmMv-4/7006%252520Mountain%252520Girdle%252520Moth%252520%252528Enypia%252520griseata%252529%252520_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="611" height="515"></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-75XU5crYUCI/Ve89tcWzWiI/AAAAAAAAD_I/Gkzkxw9FXVo/s1600-h/10641%252520Old%252520Man%252520Dart%252520Moth%252520%252528Agrotis%252520vetusta%252529%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img title="10641 Old Man Dart Moth (Agrotis vetusta)" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="10641 Old Man Dart Moth (Agrotis vetusta)" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9zTdC6lfdAg/Ve89uWyQlbI/AAAAAAAAD_Q/hLZ_RcM5znQ/10641%252520Old%252520Man%252520Dart%252520Moth%252520%252528Agrotis%252520vetusta%252529_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="510" height="646"></a></p> Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-434145388683350431.post-71610599409855139832015-09-03T18:36:00.001-06:002015-09-03T18:42:28.971-06:00First night of no moths<p>Well, the title is a slight exaggeration because I did find one Olive Arches on the siding by the back door. However, it was the first non rainy night since spring that both the light and bait traps were completely empty. The temperature must have dropped very quickly.</p> <p>Just to add, I have started to update the “Moths of Calgary and Southern Alberta” gallery on my website at <a title="http://www.albertanaturephotography.com/mothsofcalgary" href="http://www.albertanaturephotography.com/mothsofcalgary">http://www.albertanaturephotography.com/mothsofcalgary</a>.</p> <p>I’ve added some new species and have started to replace a few of the photographs with what are, hopefully, slightly better images. </p> Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-434145388683350431.post-24436331628122127602015-09-02T20:06:00.001-06:002015-09-02T21:56:00.378-06:00Blog for 12th August to 2nd Sept<p>My backyard moth numbers and been fairly low since the middle of August averaging approximately 12 species of Macro Moths each night. This can probably be attributed to some wet weather and a gradual drop in overnight temperatures. I have added one new backyard species since my last blog, Abagrotis hermina (actually seen on the 1st August). Thanks again to Gary Anweiler for confirming my ID. </p> <p>I’ve included photographs of some of the August backyard species. Most of the images are “stacked”. That is, they are comprised of one or more photographs which use slightly different focus points. In general I only 2 photographs but the Alfalfa Looper is made up of 4 photographs.</p> <p>Looking at trends, it appears that the Large Yellow Underwing is more common this year. So far I have recorded almost double the number (43) when compared to any previous year. This is an introduced species which is probably still expanding its range.</p> <p>The new moths since my last blog are as follows:</p> <p>White Underwing (Catocala relicta)<br>Neumogen's Quaker (Oligia egens)<br>Kidney-spotted Rustic (Helotropha reniformis)<br>Cow Parsnip Borer Moth (Papaipema harrisi)<br>Pale Enargia (Enargia decolor)<br>Mouse Moth (Amphipyra tragopoginis)<br>Bicolored Sallow Moth (Sunira bicolorago)<br>Puta Sallow Moth (Anathix puta)<br>Venerable Dart (Dusky Cutworm) (Agrotis venerabilis)<br>Euxoa auxiliaris<br>Collard Dart (Agnorisma bugrai)<br>Abagrotis hermina – New backyard Moth.</p> <p>Neumogen's Quaker (Oligia egens) is quite a small moth but is one of the more colourful Noctuidae.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FjICP2Hu-Fk/Veeq0ZL_BMI/AAAAAAAAD4s/dI_ZE8QQ-74/s1600-h/Untitled_Panorama1D%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="Untitled_Panorama1D" style="border-left-width: 0px; In my own defense, this was at least in part due to vacations and some very nasty thunderstorms. Anyway, here’s a quick summary of how the backyard mothing has been going. I’ve been getting between 16 and 26 macro moth species overnight. The actual number is somewhat higher as I do not include unidentified or unidentifiable (without dissection) species.</p> <p>During this period (22nd July-12th Aug) there were 2 are new macro moth species and another 18 that were new for the year. Thanks to Gary Anweiler for confirming the identification of the Colorful Zale Moth (Zale minerea), which apparently, is quite a late sighting (it was in my bait trap on the 24th July).<br>Here’s the list. New species have an * against them. The others are just new for this year.</p> <p>*Colorful Zale Moth (Zale minerea)<br>*Old Man Dart Moth (Agrotis vetusta) <br>Sulphur Wave (Hesperumia sulphuraria) <br>White Underwing (Catocala relicta) <br>Semirelict Underwing Moth (Catocala semirelicta)<br>Charming Underwing Moth (Catocala blandula)<br>Two-spotted Looper (Autographa bimaculata)<br>White-streaked Looper (Plusia venusta)<br>Narrow-winged Borer (Photedes defecta)<br>Brachylomia populi<br>Thinker Moth (Lacinipolia meditata)<br>Brown Arches Moth (Lacinipolia stricta)<br>Bronzed Cutworm Moth (Nephelodes minians)<br>Euxoa tristicula<br>Sordid Dart (Euxoa adumbrata)<br>Euxoa ochrogaster<br>Obelisk Dart (Euxoa obeliscoides)<br>Black Army Cutworm (Actebia fennica)<br>Green Arches (Anaplectoides prasina)<br>Two-spot Dart (Protolampra rufipectus)</p> <p>My total for identified backyard macro moth species in 2015 is now 136 which is already 3 better than last year, although, in 2012 I had 201 species! My all-time backyard list is now at 297. Maybe I will get to 300 this year??</p> <p>The two part golden stigma on the Two-spotted Looper (Autographa bimaculata) were very impressive. I hope the photograph does it justice. I plan to include a few more photographs from the above period in future blogs.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Zi29SEsu4F0/Vc1F8I70uRI/AAAAAAAAD3g/MZKzp1OFKtU/s1600-h/Zale-Lunata%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="Zale-Lunata" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Zale-Lunata" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JZT8kbL1iR0/Vc1F8yEb_yI/AAAAAAAAD3o/GRwN8GIs9U0/Zale-Lunata_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="667" height="327"></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TPvr8Ogjg5E/Vc1F9-Y0fWI/AAAAAAAAD3w/8ZpS6cG2WCs/s1600-h/Untitled_Panorama1blog%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="Untitled_Panorama1blog" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Untitled_Panorama1blog" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HidGVw6daf8/Vc1F-p8XoeI/AAAAAAAAD34/qOOwB8B6Ws0/Untitled_Panorama1blog_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="666" height="437"></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vv3uZffrUlo/Vc1F_W0slaI/AAAAAAAAD4A/DcPUh6-JtWs/s1600-h/Untitled_Panorama11kA%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="Untitled_Panorama11kA" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Untitled_Panorama11kA" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KLhxW6pJtpA/Vc1GAAaCVoI/AAAAAAAAD4I/vStMFl1iUzs/Untitled_Panorama11kA_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="667" height="452"></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YOK8NFuhDxo/Vc1GB5YHbKI/AAAAAAAAD4Q/cVpUKOmV2wY/s1600-h/BP%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="BP" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="BP" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g3b3LXZFxYQ/Vc1GCk1XW_I/AAAAAAAAD4Y/gb-zY1ESRsQ/BP_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="554" height="635"></a></p> Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-434145388683350431.post-72282409322911512792015-07-21T19:25:00.001-06:002015-07-21T19:31:22.947-06:00Blog entry for 15th-21st July<p>The moth numbers during this period have continued to be quite high, although, probably no higher than in other years. On average there have been approx. 24 species of 100+ macro moths.</p> <p>Two notable records were a Southern Quaker (Apamea impulsa), which I’ve only recorded once before in 2008 and my second record of a Green-patched Looper Moth (Diachrysia balluca). The latter moth, probably because of the iridescent green patch that changes colour as it reflects the light, is also know as a Hologram moth. As can be seen the numbers are quite high which is to be expected during this warm and fairly dry spell.</p> <p>During this period there were 7 new species for the year. 1 of these was a new moth for my backyard, a Brown-lined Sallow Moth (Sympistis badistriga). The other new species for the year were:</p> <p>Johnson's Euchlaena (Euchlaena johnsonaria)<br>Pale beauty (Campaea perlata)<br>Parthenice Tiger Moth (Grammia parthenice)<br>Canadian Fan-foot (Zanclognatha lutalba)<br>Wavy Chestnut Y (Autographa mappa)<br>Anhimella contrahens</p> <p>It’s always nice to get your first tiger moth of the year and the Wavy Chestnut Y (Autographa mappa) is certainly a colourful species.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-h88e8wJ2HLA/VaAnkhaC-WI/AAAAAAAADy4/nB_79rUm4NE/s1600-h/wavy1%252520%2525281%252529%25255B10%25255D.jpg"><img title="wavy1 (1)" style="border-top: 0px; I did have 64 macro moths of 24 species on the 2nd with 3 new species for the year.</p> <p>False Bruce Spanworm (Speranza loricaria)<br>White-banded Toothed Carpet (Euphyia intermediata)<br>Rusty Holomelina (Virbia ferruginosa)</p> <p>It’s always nice to be able photograph a couple of Geometrids as they tend to be a lot more active than the Noctuids. This was only my second record of the Rusty Holomelina (Virbia ferruginosa), although, I think I could quite easily overlook this small moth. The Garden Arches (Lacanobia radix) is a common backyard moth.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5vZ_Bj8bD_A/VZxxEghysvI/AAAAAAAADvA/Uw16EFiyJYw/s1600-h/FBS%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="FBS" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="FBS" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bN_hagsMRCg/VZxxFq8IRAI/AAAAAAAADvI/ihUYagvzfbs/FBS_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="624" height="503"></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-duO0V7M7qzo/VZxxHfoukVI/AAAAAAAADvQ/oGAKLbZxdjs/s1600-h/WBTC%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="WBTC" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="WBTC" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RKQkrRHfqpA/VZxxIPuKswI/AAAAAAAADvY/CxO-Sc6K8sI/WBTC_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="626" height="374"></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2XMw0zVUWv8/VZxxI4s4FrI/AAAAAAAADvg/FxdfWdG9vKE/s1600-h/RH%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img title="RH" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="RH" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UdUPKYYUDnM/VZxxJwxsQlI/AAAAAAAADvk/IXfM5eMbUj0/RH_thumb%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="618" height="413"></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-F033AqSWRtk/VZxxLn_4EjI/AAAAAAAADvw/VnjKwMK2x3E/s1600-h/GC%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img title="GC" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="GC" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-N3-1pkzC8o8/VZxxNE9NlII/AAAAAAAADv4/OBJAldyHcC4/GC_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="613" height="644"></a></p> Calgary Mothshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06698041191711093527noreply@blogger.com0
